A Michigan ice cream maker is recalling a batch of its vegan coconut fudge sandwiches after learning the dessert may contain undeclared egg, an allergen that can trigger dangerous reactions in sensitive consumers.
The dessert maker said the recall traces back to a recalled ingredient supplied by another company: Rooted in Rare brand Aquafaba Powder, sold in 4-ounce and 12-ounce foil pouches. Consumers who bought the sandwiches are being told to return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund, and those with questions can call Blank Slate Creamery at 1-734-580-2437.
That recall was prompted after a customer reported an allergic reaction to the product. The company said it has since cut ties with the supplier responsible for the contamination. "We regret any inconvenience this has caused and have terminated our relationship with this particular supplier," the company said in its announcement. 529 Commerce is directing affected customers to discard the powder and seek refunds through Amazon or its own customer service line at 1-888-693-1013 or [email protected].
In rare instances, exposure can escalate into anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction marked by airway swelling, abdominal cramping, a racing heart and a dangerous drop in blood pressure. The Mayo Clinic advises that anyone experiencing these symptoms use an epinephrine autoinjector immediately and seek emergency medical care.
