A sauce sold at Whole Foods Markets across the United States has been recalled due to an undeclared allergen.

Winter Gardens Quality Foods Inc. is voluntarily recalling its vodka sauce carrying the lot code 20057 due to undeclared milk.

A customer found the product's back label showing the wrong ingredient and allergen statement, which initiated the recall.

The affected product was found in a 16-ounce plastic tub container and the incorrectly labeled items have the following UPC code: 853594006084 and the label below, the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) said in a statement.

Consumers should use the lot number to determine if the product is affected and not the expiry date, according to the statement.

The product was sold on or after March 2 at Whole Foods Market stores in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

"Consumers who have a food allergy or have any sensitivity to milk should not consume the product as it could result in a serious life-threatening allergic reaction," the FDA said.

Winter Gardens is currently working with regulatory authorities to return all the affected products and has taken substantial actions to prevent any recurrences.

To date, no illnesses from consumers have been reported.

The company said any consumer with questions about the recall can contact Winter Gardens Quality Manager Tiffany Roney at 717-624-6032
