GENEVA—Switzerland has just added a new destination to every hikers bucket list.

On July 29, Switzerland inaugurated the world's longest suspension foot bridge, along a trail toward the famed Matterhorn.

The 1,620-foot bridge can cut hiking time on the "Europaweg trail"—a well-known path among hiking lovers—by three hours or more between the southwestern towns of Graechen and Zermatt. The path offers stunning panoramic views of the famous Matterhorn, Weisshorn, and Bernese Alps.

At only 25 inches wide, the bridge rises an awesome 279 feet above the ground, allowing hikers to walk across the deepest-cut valley in Switzerland.

The bridge replaces another shorter one that was damaged in 2010 by falling rocks.

Zermatt Tourism says the bridge sets a new record for the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, surpassing Germany's 1,506-foot "Titan-RT.”
