A 9-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a school bus while crossing a street in Brooklyn early Friday morning, officials said.

Police responded to the intersection of Lee Avenue and Lorimer Street in South Williamsburg shortly after 8 a.m. local time after receiving a report that a pedestrian had been struck in the area, an NYPD spokesperson told NTD over the phone on Friday.

Once officers arrived at the scene, they found the boy "unconscious and unresponsive" and suffering injuries to his head and body. Emergency medical services personnel transported him to Woodhull Hospital, less than a mile away, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials have not released the identities of the child or the bus driver who was allegedly involved in the incident.

However, the NYPD spokesperson said that preliminary information indicates a 49-year-old man was making a left turn from Lee Avenue onto Lorimer Street, at which point the yellow school bus struck the boy as he was crossing the road. It's unclear where the child was headed, but several elementary schools are in the vicinity.

The spokesperson said the bus driver initially left the scene but later returned when he was notified of the incident. No additional information about the incident was shared, and no arrests have been made at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.

Local media chopper footage from the scene showed the intersection cordoned off by police tape as multiple officers worked the area. The intersection of Lee Avenue and Lorimer Street—a busy residential junction that connects directly with Wallabout Street—was closed to traffic following the incident as the investigation continued.
NYC Crash Mapper data shows that since January, there have been more than 500 crash incidents in the Williamsburg area, including almost 90 involving pedestrians and cyclists who sustained injuries. Last month, Williamsburg 365 reported that the city installed a pedestrian island in the middle of the Lee Avenue and Lorimer Street intersection to improve safety at the five-way junction.

Following the recent accident, Mayor of New York City Zohran Mamdani took to social media to share that he was devastated by the boy's death.

"My heart is with his family and loved ones as they endure this tragic loss," he wrote on X. "Children should be safe walking around our city, and this horrific road death is a painful reminder that we must continue to use every tool available to make our streets safe for all New Yorkers."
