A body was pulled from the North Sea on Friday after a passenger went overboard from a British cruise ship during a voyage tied to the August solar eclipse, authorities said. The man's family has been notified, though formal identification has not yet occurred, according to Police Scotland.

The incident took place aboard Ambition, a vessel operated by British cruise company Ambassador Cruise Line, according to a statement the company posted to Facebook on Aug. 21. Ambassador currently runs three ships in its fleet.

Ambassador Cruise Line has been approached for comment.

According to Ambassador's statement, the ship's captain reported a missing passenger on the morning of Aug. 21 while Ambition was sailing from Lerwick to Dundee in Scotland. Crew members found that a guest was not in their expected location, triggering an alarm. The cruise later docked in Dundee, where the crew conducted a full search of the ship.

Passengers were initially told to stay aboard during the search but were later cleared to leave the ship. The company said it kept guests updated throughout the search and coordinated with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, HM Coastguard, and Police Scotland.

Police Scotland provided additional details in a statement to Cruise Fever, saying officers received a report around 8:55 a.m. on Aug. 21 that a man had gone overboard roughly 40 nautical miles from Anstruther, Fife. "A search and rescue operation, carried out by police and partner agencies, has been ongoing, and a body has been recovered," the agency said. "Formal identification is yet to take place; however, the family of the man who was reported missing has been informed.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland did not immediately return a request for comment from NTD.

Turnaround Process Delayed

Ambassador said the turnaround process in Dundee was delayed as a result of the incident, but passengers booked for Ambition's next sailing were still told to arrive at the port according to their scheduled embarkation times. The company said it could not release further information because the matter is part of an active police investigation.

Ambition had been completing a two-week itinerary built around the 2026 solar eclipse, with stops in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Lerwick in Scotland's Shetland Islands. The ship carries up to 1,248 passengers.

Reaction poured in from passengers who were aboard during the search. One commenter wrote: "We were on board Ambition today, and can only say how professionally and calmly the crew handled this terrible situation. We know many of us now face rearranging our onward journeys, but our thoughts are entirely with the missing passenger's loved ones at this awful time. It feels such a sad and poignant end to what was otherwise an absolutely wonderful cruise."

Another passenger commented: "We had a lovely cruise so memorable. It will also be remembered for this tragic situation. Thoughts go out to the man's family and friends. May he rest in peace 🙏 😢 Also to all the crew who experienced this situation and are going again to sea tonight."

Ambassador said in its statement that it remains "committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our guests and crew" and continues to follow international maritime safety and search-and-rescue protocols.
