Two suspects led law enforcement on a chase across Los Angeles Sunday night, carjacking multiple vehicles, including a white big rig, on live television before escaping on foot.
The pursuit began shortly before 11 p.m. when the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spotted the suspects inside a pickup truck believed to have been stolen. Deputies began following the vehicle as it moved through the San Fernando Valley.
At one point, the pickup truck stopped, and the suspects attempted to break into two separate cars but were unsuccessful. Shortly afterward, the suspects carjacked a white big rig on Interstate 5 near Sylmar and sped away, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The chase then proceeded through several parts of Los Angeles, including Santa Clarita, North Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, Echo Park, downtown Los Angeles, Westlake, and Boyle Heights. Authorities said the suspects were traveling the wrong way on Interstate 10.
LAPD officials described the suspects as “armed and dangerous” and urged the public to use caution in the area. The department issued several traffic advisories throughout the night, warning drivers of the ongoing pursuit and the dangerous behavior of the suspects.
Around 11:30 p.m., the suspects abandoned the big rig near downtown Los Angeles. They quickly carjacked a white pickup truck and fled toward the Boyle Heights neighborhood, the LAPD posted.
During the chase, one suspect reportedly fired gunshots at California Highway Patrol officers, according to reports from ABC7 News. No injuries have been confirmed by law enforcement.
After roughly an hour-long pursuit, the suspects appeared to flee on foot in the Boyle Heights area. As of early Monday morning, no arrests had been made. Authorities have not released the identities of the two individuals involved.
The incident was captured live on television, with news outlets broadcasting the pursuit as it unfolded. LAPD Central Division’s official social media accounts posted several updates overnight, including alerts about the suspects driving the wrong way on the freeway, abandoning the big rig, and carjacking additional vehicles.
The public was urged to remain cautious, as officials have also warned that the suspects are considered armed and dangerous. No details have been released regarding the companies or owners of the stolen vehicles, including the big rig or the pickup trucks involved.
NTD has reached out to LAPD for an update but has not yet heard back from the police department. The last updates posted from the LAPD was that the suspects are considered armed and dangerous, were in the Boyle Heights area, and that the "suspects appear to have carjacked another vehicle."
