Creating a world globe the old school way.

Creating a world globe the old school way.

Most people can remember the good old school globes that used to be present in many classrooms. But the question is, how were they made originally? This video shows the process used to construct a traditional school globe. With a bit of workshop equipment, you might even be able to make one for yourself at home.

The first step is creating a round sphere from wood, coating it with gypsum to make it a perfect ball shape, then printing and cutting the spindle shaped layers of paper with the colorful map sections on it. Once the spindle shaped papers are prepared, the workers begin gluing them to the prepared surface of the globe. The final steps include correcting the lines where the paper sections overlap, and spraying a thick layer of varnish over the whole thing, to make it tough and durable. Then the globe is ready to go.
