“The recall was initiated after a crunch topping from a separate product was inadvertently introduced to this particular batch of Passion Fruit Dreamsicle Ice Cream Bars during manufacturing,” the FDA said.
The dessert is described on packaging as “aromatic, sun-kissed passion fruit twisted with key lime…A tropical spin on the classic.”
The sweet treat’s crunchy topping contains wheat and soy, which the FDA said is not declared on its packaging.
The recall is applicable to batch code 25-210.
"No illnesses or reactions have been reported to date," company leaders told NTD in an email. "However, out of an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to recall the product. No other Jeni’s products or flavors are affected."
There are nine major food allergens that the FDA requires all companies to identify in their products, which include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.
The importance of the recall, noted by the FDA, is that an allergy or severe sensitivity to any of the allergens can result in serious or life-threatening bodily reactions.
The FDA urged soy and wheat-sensitive shoppers who may have purchased the ice cream not to consume the product and instead dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The Passion Fruit Dreamsicle Ice Cream Bars recall is just the latest in a series of ice cream recalls.
Earlier this month, on Nov. 6, the FDA assigned its second-highest risk alert to 979 cases of strawberry ice cream sold in 29 states.
The Häagen-Dazs Dark Chocolate Mini Bars were sold in 31 states at Kroger and Giant Eagle. The batch code is LLA519501 with an expiration date of Jan. 31, 2027.
In October, the FDA announced the recall of one lot of Publix Rich & Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream with UPC 41415 03043 due to concerns about the potential undeclared presence of eggs.
