The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this week that Herbalife Nutrition Relaxation Tea is under recall nationally and internationally.
“Incorrect ingredient was received from supplier and used in manufacturing finished product Relaxation Tea,” the FDA said.
The lot number on the packaging is D925507J02 and the expiration date is April 11, 2027.
The tea is sold online in all U.S. states as well as in Mexico and Ecuador, according to the FDA. Company leaders did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.
"The underlying contract with a supplier likely includes indemnification provisions and other language that would allow Herbalife to recover from the supplier because the supplier provided the wrong ingredients or goods," food industry expert, FruitSlabs.com CEO and Yeastie Boys Bagels part-owner Brandon Dorsky told NTD.
Herbalife is a weight management and nutritional supplement manufacturer that was popular in the mid-1980s. In 2014, the company sought to settle a lawsuit that alleged the company’s business structure and marketing practices violated federal and state laws.
Herbalife states that the recalled tea’s ingredients include lemon balm extract, maltodextrin, natural peppermint flavor, natural spearmint flavor, natural lavender flavor, passionflower extract, chamomile flower extract, lavender flower extract, and stevia leaf extract.
“There have been many reports of acute, clinically apparent liver injury in persons taking Herbalife products, but the link to the Herbalife Dietary Supplement (HDS) product has often been controversial,” the NLM stated. “The specific ingredients in the various Herbalife products that might cause liver injury have not been identified.”
