Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was up and walking the day after he had brain surgery according to his pastor, several news outlets reported.

According to CNN, Carter was brought into the hospital due to built-up pressure on his brain as a result of multiple falls, and needed surgery to relieve the pressure from his subdural hematoma. USA Today reported that the former president underwent brain surgery at Emory University Hospital, in Atlanta, Georgia, on Nov. 12.

Following the surgery, Reverand Tony Lowden, the pastor of the Maranatha Baptist Church, which is Carter’s church located in Plains, Georgia, asked Carter’s staff about the former president’s health and if he could visit Carter at the hospital, CNN reported. Carter’s staff allowed the Reverand to meet with the former president the next day on Nov. 13.

Following his visit with the former president, Lowden said that Carter was in good spirits.

Deanna Congileo, the Carter Center spokeswoman said, according to USA Today, that there were no complications with the former president’s surgery. However, Carter would be hospitalized following the surgery and remain under observation for as long as the medical team suggested.

According to USA Today, the president had suffered from three falls this year prior to the most recent one. The first time was back in May 2019 when he fell at his residence in Plains, Georgia, shortly before the start of a turkey hunt. The news outlet reported that as a result of the fall, Carter needed hip replacement surgery.

On Oct. 6, Carter hit his head on a sharp ledge at his residence, according to the news outlet. As a result of the fall and injury, the former president ended up with a bruised left eye and needed 14 stitches. The third fall happened at his home on Oct. 21, which left him with a fractured pelvis, for which he was hospitalized.

The former president recently celebrated his 95th birthday on Oct. 1, and became the oldest living U.S. President, according to CNN. This title was previously held by George W. H. Bush, who passed away at the age of 94 in late 2018, according to the news outlet.
