British actress Kate Beckinsale was hospitalized over the weekend after suffering a ruptured ovarian cyst.

"Turns out a ruptured ovarian cyst really hurts and morphine makes me cry," Beckinsale wrote on Instagram. "So thankful to everyone who looked after me #wobbly."

Beckinsale, 45, posted a teary-eyed photo of herself in the hospital with an oxygen cannula in her nose, as well as a second photo of her in the hospital bed.

Ovarian Cysts are Common, But Lots of Pain is Not

The majority of ovarian cysts, which are little fluid-filled sacs that form on the ovary, cause little to no pain and will disappear on their own in a matter of months, according to the Mayo Clinic. Usually, the cysts come and go without the person ever knowing about them.
However, if a cyst does rupture, it can cause serious symptoms including pain, swelling, pressure, and bloating in the lower abdomen on the side of the cyst, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Women's Health Magazine also reposted Beckinsale's photo and captioned it, "Sending all the good vibes to #KateBeckinsale, who was recently hospitalized with a ruptured ovarian cyst."

Beckinsale Responds to Comments and Support

As if dealing with a ruptured ovarian cyst wasn't enough, Beckinsale responded to a commenter who wrote on her post, "but first let me take a selfie."

"It's actually not a selfie," she replied. "My mum took it. In fact I would not have posted it if we had not noticed someone in a car taking a photo of me leaving the hospital in a wheelchair."

She went on to explain, "I have Instagram largely to have my own honest narrative and not have to always be ambushed by stories that come out that are invented, I'd prefer to say what happened then endure speculation and so I chose to share. I agree, it's not a normal impulse. But it's not normal to be photographed in vulnerable situations by people you don't know either. (If you were interested in knowing the provenance of this, which, you probably are not.)"

The "Underworld" star received support from fellow celebrities. Australian actress and author, Isla Fisher, commented, "Are you okay? Sending you so much love."

"I know the feeling, I'm so so sorry," Mexican actress and singer Eiza González commented. "I wish you a quick recovery. Sending you love."

Another user thanked her for sharing, commenting, "You have no idea how a couple pictures and sharing your journey helps so many other women who have and are experiencing this. The old days we used to suffer in silence and feel so alone. Now we all have the platform to share our experiences to help others."

The user ended by sharing, "One of my favorite quotes is 'You are not a victim for sharing your story. You are a survivor setting the world on fire with your truth. And you never know who needs your light, your warmth and raging courage.'"

Other celebrities wishing Beckinsale a speedy recovery and sending their love included Rose McGowan, Sarah Silverman, Melanie Griffith, and Courtney Love.
