NBA star LeBron James opted not to renew his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in order to become an unrestricted free agent.

LeBron, a four-time league Most Valuable Player, could be looking to move to a more powerful team.

The Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, or Philadelphia 76ers have been suggested as possible destinations.

It isn’t about money. James could stay with Cleveland and earn up to $205 million for a five-year contract but he would be able to sing for as much as $152 million with any other team, ESPN reported.

It is more likely that James, 33, will be looking to join a team which can bring him more championships.

It is possible James will stay with Cleveland with as series of one-and-one contracts—a year at $35.4 million and an option for another year at $38.2 million—which would give him lots of freedom to play for the team he thinks is most likely to take him to another championship.

The Cavaliers have reached the NBA finals four years running, but James hasn’t touched the trophy since 2016.

It is possible LeBron’s decision was prompted by rumors that the L.A. Lakers are angling to sign all-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard, ESPN reported.

The Lakers would be able to field an unstoppable two-superstar attack in both Leonard and James joined the squad.

Leonard currently plays for the san Antonio Spurs but that team has made it known they would trade Leonard, who has been nagged by a quadriceps injury of unknown severity.

Leonard has himself said he would like to play for the Lakers.

The Philadelphia 76ers have also shown interest in Leonard, and could sign both Leonard and James to maximum-value contracts with only a little adjustment to their roster to stay below the salary cap.

LeBron James addressed his concerns with his future at the Cavaliers after the team was swept out of the NBA playoffs by the Golden State Warriors.

"The one thing that I've always done is considered, obviously, my family," James said.

"Understanding especially where my boys are at this point in their age. They were a lot younger the last time I made a decision like this four years ago.

“I've got a teenage boy, a preteen and a little girl that wasn't around as well. So sitting down and considering everything, my family is a huge part of whatever I'll decide to do in my career, and it will continue to be that."
