Louisiana will postpone its U.S. House primaries in order to allow time for lawmakers to redraw and pass a new congressional map, according to an executive order signed by Republican Gov. Jeff Landry on April 30.
Landry and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill released a joint statement, saying, “Yesterday’s historic Supreme Court victory for Louisiana has an immediate consequence for the State.”
“The Supreme Court previously stayed an injunction against the State’s enforcement of the current Congressional map,” the statement said.
“By the Court’s order, however, that stay automatically terminated with yesterday’s decision. Accordingly, the State is currently enjoined from carrying out congressional elections under the current map. We are working together with the Legislature and the Secretary of State’s office to develop a path forward.”
The primary election was previously scheduled for May 16, and early voting was supposed to start on May 2.
A number of positions were on the ballot, including for the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, the Louisiana Supreme Court, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the Public Service Commission, according to Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry, who is not related to the governor despite sharing the same surname.
President Donald Trump shared his support of the postponement in a Truth Social post on Thursday afternoon.
“Thank you to the Great Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, for his leadership on the very important Callais case, and for moving so quickly to fix the Unconstitutionality of Louisiana’s Congressional Maps,” Trump wrote.
“He has shown tremendous Vision, Strength, and Leadership. Thank you Jeff, keep up the GREAT work!”
In a separate post, Trump voiced his disapproval about another lawmaker in the state, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.).
“For months, Senator Bill Cassidy (of the GREAT State of Louisiana!), a very disloyal person whose ‘TRUMP’ Endorsement got him elected, but later voted to impeach 'President Trump' on what has now proven to be a total Hoax and Scam, has stood in the way of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Nominee, Casey Means, for the important position of U.S. Surgeon General.” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Thursday.
Cassidy is a Republican who was elected to his Senate seat in 2014 and reelected in 2020.
Trump withdrew the nomination of Means to be surgeon general and revealed on Thursday that he tapped Fox News contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier, instead.
