Nearly 180,000 Safety 1st child car seats are being recalled over a potential choking hazard due to loose foam in the headrest, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and car seat manufacturer Dorel Juvenile Group.

The recall, initiated last week, affects 179,845 units of the Safety 1st Grow & Go Sprint child seats with model numbers CC321GYU, CC321GYUD, CC321GYY, CC321GYYD, CC321HAO, and CC321HAR.

The seats were manufactured between Feb. 28, 2023, and Dec. 31, 2023.

According to Dorel Juvenile Group, the headrest foam pad in such models is not adequately secured, which can allow children to pick off pieces of foam and potentially place them in their mouths.

Dorel Juvenile Group reported 13 cases in which a child placed a piece of the car seat's headrest foam into his or her mouth, but no injuries or need for medical treatment have been reported, according to the company’s recall filing.

Production of the CC321 models began in February 2023, with the first incident reported in June 2023. Three additional cases were reported in October 2023, and production of the affected models ended in December 2023.

Dorel continued to monitor the issue and included foam-in-mouth cases in its regular safety reports, eventually choosing to formally recall all CC321 models on April 12, 2025, after discussions with the NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation.

Other Safety 1st-branded child restraints, including those with similar names but different model numbers, are not affected by the recall. Dorel stated that those other models use different headrest foam designs, assembly processes, or materials, so they are not subject to the same risk.

As a remedy, Dorel Juvenile Group will mail a free replacement headrest pad assembly kit to registered owners. The new pad securely covers the foam headrest to prevent children from accessing the foam. Notification letters to owners are expected to be mailed between June 9 and June 13.

The foam component in question was supplied by EPSilyte, an insulation polymer manufacturer based in Piqua, Ohio, according to the recall documents.

Dealers are scheduled to be notified of the recall between April 23 and April 25, 2025.

In December 2024, the NHTSA announced a voluntary recall of over 600,000 car seats, sold by Nuna Baby Essentials Inc., due to a potential safety hazard with the harness adjuster mechanism. The recall affected Rava car seats manufactured between July 16, 2016, and Oct. 25, 2023, with the affected models differing from those that have fabric covering the harness adjuster area.
