After a couple days of rain, sunny skies are out for the second full day of action at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Sunday's competition features more excitement in gymnastics, basketball, and swimming, with 13 sets of medals up for grabs.

Organizers of the Paris Olympics issued a statement after coming under fire for parodying a biblical scene in the Games’ opening ceremony.Drag performers evoked a scene of the Last Supper, and the Catholic Church in France criticized “scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity” in the opening display.
A spokesperson on Sunday told media that this was not the intention.
Huske Takes 100-Meter Butterfly Gold in US 1–2
Torri Huske beat U.S. teammate and world record holder Gretchen Walsh to win the women's 100 meters butterfly gold at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.The 2022 world champion touched out in 55.59 seconds to secure the first individual gold of the 2024 Games for a U.S. female swimmer, with Walsh taking silver in 55.63.
China's Zhang Yufei took the bronze.
Huske's win continued a sequence of the event never having had a repeat winner since it was first held in 1956. Canada's reigning champion Maggie Mac Neil finished fifth.

US Takes Bronze in Men’s 400-Meter Individual Medley
Léon Marchand of France won gold in the men’s 400-meter individual medley, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 4:02:95.Michael Phelps previously held the record of 4:03:84, recorded in the 2008 Olympics.
Tomoyuki Matsushita of Japan won silver and Team USA’s Carson Foster took bronze.
US Men's Basketball Team Rolls Past Serbia 110–84 in Opening Game
LeBron James made his Olympic return after a 12-year absence. Kevin Durant played for the first time this summer.And the two most-experienced Olympians on this U.S. team opened the Paris Games—not to mention a bid for a fifth consecutive gold medal for the Americans—with a near-perfect show.
Durant made his first eight shots on the way to 23 points in less than 17 minutes, James added 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and the U.S. rolled to a 110-84 win over Serbia in the Olympic opener for both teams on Saturday.
They were a combined 18 for 22 from the field—8 of 9 for Durant, 9 of 13 for James—as the United States had no trouble with the reigning World Cup silver medalists from last summer in the Philippines. Jrue Holiday scored 15, Devin Booker had 12, and Anthony Edwards and Stephen Curry each added 11 for the United States.
Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic scored 20 points for Serbia, while Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 14.
South Korea Takes 10th Gold in Women's Team Archery
South Korea narrowly beat out China for the gold in women's team archery after a tiebreaker shot.Jeon Hunyoung, Lim Sihyeon, and Nam Suhyeon are representing South Korea, and secured the country's 10th consecutive gold medal in women's team archery. This makes South Korea undefeated in the event since it began in Seoul in 1988.
Lim is a new world record holder, last week scoring 694 and setting a world record in women's individual archery.

Rafael Nadal Wins in Olympic Singles and Will Play Rival Novak Djokovic Next
Rafael Nadal made a last-minute decision to play singles at the Paris Olympics on Sunday and won his first-round match against Marton Fucsovics 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to set up a blockbuster showdown against rival Novak Djokovic.Not only did the 38-year-old Spaniard play, but for stretches, particularly in the early going and in crunch time down the stretch, he played very much like a version of himself everyone is used to seeing: the sprinting, sliding, grunting star who owns 22 Grand Slam trophies in all and won Olympic gold medals for Spain in singles in 2008 and doubles in 2016.
And the crowd loved it, regaling him with clap-accompanied chants of his nickname, “Ra-fa! Ra-fa!”

Team USA's Kanak Jha Advances in Table Tennis
Kanak Jha, a five time national champion, is competing in his third Olympics and is the sole table tennis representative of Team USA."The ultimate goal and dream is to do history for the USA and get a medal in the Olympics," said Jha.
After defeating Cho Daesong of Korea, he has advanced to the Round of 32 which will take place Wednesday.

Haley Batten Takes Home Silver for Team USA
After cycling wheel-to-wheel with Jenny Rissveds of Sweden for several laps, Team USA's Haley Batten secured the silver medal in the women's mountain bike cross-country event.French cyclist Pauline Ferrand-Prévot took home gold after building a long lead ahead of the pack, winning by 2 minutes and 57 seconds.

Rafael Nadal Walks on Court to Compete in Singles
Rafael Nadal was greeted by a standing ovation from a full crowd at Court Philippe Chatrier when he stepped onto its red clay for his first-round singles match against Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.It’s the same stadium where Nadal has won a record 14 French Open titles — and there is a statue of the Spaniard outside the arena, where fans gathered to snap photos of themselves with the steel rendering of the player. He gave a quick wave as he walked in during prematch introductions.
When Nadal and Fucsovics began warming up, there were shouts of “Ole!” and then “Ra-fa! Ra-fa!”
Spectators rose from their seats again when Nadal jumped out to a 3-0 lead after just 13 minutes en route to taking the first set by a 6-1 score.

All Eyes on Lee Kiefer for Individual Women’s Foil
Now a four-time Olympian, Lee Kiefer became the first U.S. athlete to win gold in foil fencing four years ago at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, putting her in a position to defend her title as she enters the quarterfinals today. She will face Flora Pasztor of Hungary this morning.Kiefer, a third year student at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, initially thought Tokyo would be her last Olympic Game.
A fencer since age 5, the Tokyo win gave her the confidence to continue on the path of fencing, and she was granted a continued leave of absence to compete in the Paris 2024 games.

Women's Mountain Bike Cross Country Event Heats Up
Mountain bike cross country starts Sunday with the women's event, where the weather turned hot and sunny after the Olympics had kicked off in the pouring rain.The cyclists are climbing up the man-made Elancourt Hill north of the city center, which at an altitude of 231 meters at its peak is the highest point in the Paris region.
Olympic Surfers Sleep on a Cruise Ship in Tahiti, a First for the Games
Cardboard beds might be Paris' solution to providing athletes a place to sleep for the 2024 Olympics. But some 10,000 miles away in Tahiti, where the surfing competition is taking place, it's a cruise ship.About 45 minutes from the surfing venue, the Aranui 5 ship is able to accommodate about 230 passengers in over 100 cabins, with eight guest decks, a spa and gym, according to its website. It's anchored just off shore and the surfers, coaches and others take small boats to get back and forth.
Olympic officials say it is the first-ever floating athlete village.

Organizers said they nixed the swimming leg of the triathlon familiarization scheduled for Sunday after a meeting about water quality among authorities tasked with carrying out tests.The triathlon competition starts on Tuesday.

Simone Biles Dominates Gymnastics Qualifying
Simone Biles dominated during qualifying with the U.S. women's gymnastics team at the Paris Olympics on Sunday despite limping on her left leg and saying she had an issue with her calf.U.S. coach Cecile Landi said only that Biles' injury was minor, has been bothering her for a couple of weeks.
Biles' calf issue did not impact her qualifying score by much. She completed qualifying and leads the all-around standings so far with a total of 59.566.
Biles dazzled a star-studded crowd on balance beam to open qualifying, then appeared to tweak the leg while warming up on floor exercise. She left the floor with Team USA doctor Marcia Faustin.
With her ankle taped, Biles posted the highest score on floor and vault through two subdivisions. She did limit the difficulty of her uneven bars routine, skipping a unique skill she submitted to the International Gymnastics Federation on Friday. She did her usual set to score a 14.333, then tried to keep from putting too much weight on her leg following her dismount.
Landi said there's been no discussion of pulling Biles from the Paris Olympics.
Biles' next event would be the team final Tuesday.
