A parade in Philadelphia celebrating America's 250th anniversary was abruptly canceled on Friday just hours before it was set to begin amid a heat wave that has disrupted Fourth of July festivities in cities across the country.

Organizers of the event, which was part of Wawa Welcome America's annual summer festival, announced the cancellation on X early Friday morning, noting that its Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade in Old City had been called off due to the extreme heat.
An extreme heat warning remains in effect across Philadelphia as temperatures soared above 100 degrees Fahrenheit Thursday. The National Weather Service warned that a "prolonged, dangerous heat wave" is expected to continue through the Fourth of July weekend across much of the Midwest and the East Coast.
The parade was the highlight of Welcome America Inc.'s 16-day festival and was slated to feature more than a dozen floats, 50 marching bands, military units, and a variety of special performers, according to a February 2026 press release.
"As much as this decision pains everyone inside our organization, we simply cannot host an event of this size and scale under these dangerous heat conditions," Wawa Welcome America President and CEO Michael DelBene told CBS News. "[H]aving to cancel it at the last minute is heartbreaking for all of us. While large-scale celebrations and community events may be our mission, our first responsibility will always be to the safety and security of our staff, our guests, and our event participants."
Wawa Welcome America's Salute to Service concert was canceled earlier on Thursday due to the extreme heat. The event, originally scheduled for 8 p.m. at Independence National Historical Park, was set to feature Queen Latifah and the United States Army Field Band & Soldiers’ Chorus.
Fourth of July parades have also been canceled or disrupted in many other states, including parts of New Jersey and Delaware. The Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was temporarily halted until 5 p.m. local time on Friday as a result of the soaring temperatures. Freedom 250, the organizer behind the highly anticipated event, said the decision to temporarily shut down had been made in conjunction with public safety officials.

"The safety and well-being of our guests, volunteers, performers, vendors, and staff is our highest priority," the organization added. "Conditions are expected to improve later this afternoon, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back at 5:00 p.m. as preparations continue for this evening’s festivities."
