A pilot was killed Sunday morning when a small private plane crashed into a Tampa Bay-area neighborhood in Florida, officials said.
Michael Bailey, 59, of Dover, was the only person on board the plane, the Pasco Sheriff's Office told NTD via email on Monday, noting that his next of kin has been notified.
The crash occurred near the corner of Aldus Drive and Trinidad Drive, resulting in minor damage to one of the residences in the subdivision, officials said.
Christina Galbiati, a neighbor who witnessed the incident, told Fox 13 the twin-engine Cessna 401B aircraft crashed between two unfenced yards, calling the pilot a hero for avoiding the nearby homes.
Galbiati noted that the plane didn't appear to be experiencing any obvious mechanical issues, but said the aircraft sounded loud.
"I saw the plane come around and thought it was very, very low, but everything looked mechanically fine," she said. "I saw the propellers spinning, no fire or anything."
"We'll pray for them and that kind of thing, but it's tragic," Barrett said following the recent crash.
The FAA said the plane had departed from the Tampa North Aero Park, just a couple of miles away. NTD reached out to the Wesley Chapel-based facility for comment, but a response was not received by publication time.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident. The latter is leading the investigation and will provide further updates once they're available, the FAA said.
