Schreiber Foods has recalled a popular Einstein Bros. Bagels cream cheese spread sold in four Western states because it may contain undeclared almonds, posing a potentially life-threatening risk to people with tree nut allergies.

The voluntary recall covers 144 cases of Einstein Bros. Bagels Honey Almond Cream Cheese Spread that were shipped to Einstein Bros. Bagels locations in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming, the FDA announced March 28.

The recalled product comes in 6-ounce plastic cups labeled Einstein Bros. Bagels and carries a “Best If Used By Jul 21, 2026 LO” lot code on the bottom. The recalled items are marked with a Honey Almond lid but are paired with cups labeled Plain, which do not list almonds as an ingredient.

Schreiber Foods, based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, initiated the recall after discovering the mismatched lid-and-cup packaging. The company’s investigation found a “limited packaging staging issue” that led to the mix-up and determined the problem was confined to this specific product. No illnesses have been reported to date.

For people with almond allergies, consuming the mislabeled spread could trigger a dangerous immune response, according to Cleveland Clinic. Tree nut allergies occur when the body mistakenly treats nuts—such as almonds, cashews, walnuts and other tree nuts—as harmful invaders, prompting the immune system to try to “flush the allergen out” by widening blood vessels and causing swelling.

That reaction can lead to symptoms ranging from hives, rashes, and itching, to vomiting, diarrhea, belly pain, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Some reactions escalate into anaphylaxis, a life-threatening emergency that can involve swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, a sharp drop in blood pressure, dizziness, or fainting. The clinic advises people to call 911 or go to the emergency room at the first sign of severe symptoms, including trouble breathing or swallowing, widespread hives, or a feeling of impending doom.

People diagnosed with such allergies are often told by their doctor to carry an epinephrine auto-injector to use at the first signs of a serious reaction, and may also use antihistamines to help slow or reduce symptoms.

Consumers who purchased Einstein Bros. Honey Almond Cream Cheese Spread with a “Best If Used By Jul 21, 2026 LO” lot code and mismatched Honey Almond lid and Plain cup are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, according to Schreiber Foods’ recall notice.

Shoppers with questions can contact the company through the Einstein Bros. website contact page, according to the announcement.
