Most government agencies will be closed in observance of Presidents Day, while many businesses will remain open or offer a modified schedule.

The federal holiday is celebrated in the United States on the third Monday in February. This year, Presidents Day falls on Monday, Feb. 17, 2025.

The holiday was originally created to commemorate President George Washington's birthday on Feb. 22, 1732. In 1971, the holiday was moved to the third Monday in February, which created a three-day weekend for many American workers.

Throughout history, communities across the nation celebrated with parades and fireworks, and eventually businesses used the holiday to promote sales and discounts.

Will Mail Be Delivered on Presidents Day?

The United States Postal Service (USPS) observes the federal holiday, so there will be no regular mail delivery on Monday. Its retail branches will also be closed. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday.

Fedex will maintain a "modified service," meaning service and pickup times will differ from normal schedules. Earlier on-call pickups and drop box pickups will be applied to some areas.

United Parcel Service (UPS) pickup and delivery services will run according to a holiday schedule. UPS stores will remain open on Presidents Day.

Are Banks Closed?

The Federal Reserve is closed every year in observance of Presidents Day, meaning most banks across the country will also be closed.

Online banking and ATMs will remain available for customers.

Will the Stock Market Be Open?

Major stock and bond markets will be closed in observance of Presidents Day.  The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq won’t open Monday and U.S. bond trading will be suspended for the federal holiday but will maintain a regular schedule for the remainder of the week.

Other Closures

Most public schools and higher education institutions are closed every year on Presidents Day, giving students and teachers a three-day weekend. Federal and state courthouses will also suspend operations and reopen the next day.
