A British Airways plane carrying 142 passengers was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Romania's capital on Thursday evening, which the airline said was due to a suspected technical issue.

Flight BA603, an Airbus A320 traveling from Istanbul to London, touched down at Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport at 6:14 p.m. local time after pilots requested emergency landing clearance at 5:50 p.m., according to airline officials.

The airline's flight status page showed the flight as having been diverted to Bucharest.

Once the plane landed, first responders, including medics, immediately boarded it.

There were conflicting reports about whether there was any smoke aboard the plane, with the airline saying it received no reports of smoke, while Romanian Health Ministry officials confirmed the presence of smoke on the flight.

"Four people are in poor health, possibly being smoke-intoxicated, and are receiving medical assistance on site," the ministry said, before adding that "they did not require medical care."

All 142 passengers were safely evacuated from the plane.

British Airways said in a statement that the diversion was a precautionary measure.

"The safety of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority, and our crew made the decision to divert as a precaution due to a suspected technical issue," the airline said.

"The aircraft landed safely, customers disembarked normally, and we received no reports of smoke on board or hospitalisations. We're sorry to our customers for the disruption to their journeys and our teams are working to get them on their way again as quickly as possible."

The airline did not offer additional details about the technical issue that prompted the emergency landing.

The discrepancy between the two accounts of smoke on board remains a mystery.
