President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un shook hands across the border at the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), in an historic photo-op as Trump seeks to make a legacy-defining nuclear deal with the North.
Kim told reporters that Trump is now the first President of the United States to “visit our country.”
It is the third time the two leaders have met, and the first since a no-deal summit on the North’s nuclear program in Vietnam earlier in February year. Trump briefly crossed the border into North Korea after greeting Kim.
Kim then crossed into South Korea to greet South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who invited both leaders inside the Peace House in the Joint Security Area of Panmunjom village for a press conference.
Trump thanked Kim for responding to his Twitter post, saying that there was always the risk that Kim turn down his invitation to meet, in which case he would have looked very bad in front of the media.
He also thanked Kim for inviting him to step over the line into North Korea.
“I was proud to step over the time, I want to thank you … a very historic moment.
“The world is watching, very important for the world,” Trump added.
