During an Oval Office press conference on Thursday, President Donald Trump addressed a question from Iris Tao, the White House correspondent for NTD Television, regarding his recent social media posts condemning communism.
On Wednesday, Trump had taken to his platform, Truth Social, to say that while communists often receive early support from voters, their policies ultimately lead to poverty and turmoil.

"Remember, breathtaking 'Popularity' first, and then, guaranteed DEATH AND DESTRUCTION!" Trump said.

In a follow-up post, he simply asked, “Has anyone ever seen a happy communist?”

The exchange took a personal turn when Tao, whose family escaped from a communist regime, told Trump on Thursday that his posts were “certainly very meaningful to some Americans.” At Trump’s request, Tao read the social media post to the press corps.

Elaborating on his message, Trump warned of the false promises made by communist regimes: “You're going to get free rent, you're going to get free houses, you're going to get free food, you're going to get free everything."

“But eventually, that ends. And it leads to death, destruction, and squalor 100 percent of the time.” He said.

These recent posts add to a long history of Trump criticizing communism and socialism. In November 2025, he officially declared Nov. 2 to 8, 2025, as "Anti-Communism Week" to mourn the estimated 100 million victims who have lost their lives to communist political systems.

In his official White House proclamation, Trump stated that "Anti-Communism Week" serves as “a solemn remembrance of the devastation caused by one of history's most destructive ideologies."

He further added in the text of the proclamation: “For more than a century, communism has brought nothing but ruin. Wherever it spreads, it silences dissent, punishes beliefs, and demands that generations kneel before the power of the state instead of standing for freedom. Its story is written in blood and sorrow, a grim reminder that communism is nothing more than another word for servitude.”

This ideological stance mirrors rhetoric from Trump's first term, during which he frequently expounded on the dangers of far-left governance.

Addressing world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2017, he delivered a warning on the global stage: “From the Soviet Union to Cuba to Venezuela, wherever true socialism or communism has been adopted, it has delivered anguish and devastation and failure.

“Those who preach the tenets of these discredited ideologies only contribute to the continued suffering of the people who live under these cruel systems.”
