U.S. military forces said its troops killed dozens of Taliban terrorist leaders when an American artillery barrage struck a meeting of commanders.

The incident took place in Afghanistan on May 24, officials said.

The chief of NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Gen. John Nicholson, said that Taliban leaders were observed attending a meeting in Helmand Province, which is under Taliban control.

"These strikes represent one of the largest blows to Taliban leadership in the last year,” he said in a statement. "The cumulative effects of which will be felt nationwide for quite some time.”
"It was a group of commanders, meeting in part to discuss the operation in Farah that many of them had just participated in," Nicholson told the news outlet. The top Taliban terrorist killed was the “deputy shadow governor of Helmand,” according to a statement on NATO’s website.

"Among the more than 50 casualties was the deputy shadow governor of Helmand, multiple Taliban district governors, intelligence commanders and key provincial-level leadership from Kandahar, Kunduz, Herat, Farah, Uruzgan and Helmand provinces," NATO said in a statement on its website.

More than 15 Taliban fighters were killed in strikes around Helmland.

"National and international leaders have been clear: victory in Afghanistan will be a political reconciliation,” added Nicholson. "As we continue the season of fighting and talking, we will continue to increase pressure on the Taliban and remain vigilant to opportunities for negotiated peace.”

"It was a group of commanders, meeting in part to discuss the operation in Farah that many of them had just participated in," Nicholson told CNN on Wednesday, while elaborating that the Marines "tracked 50 of them to a meeting in Musa Qala and struck them with HIMARS rockets, killing dozens of the enemy leaders."
Meanwhile, Afghan special forces commandos rescued more than 105 people, including women, from a Taliban prison in southern Helmland, local news website The Khaama Press reported.

“The provincial government media office in a statement said the at least five women were among those rescued during the operation in Kajaki district,” the outlet reported.

Afghan forces also “confiscated some weapons, 10 motorcycles, 10 improvised explosive devices, and munitions during the operations,” Khaama reported.
