The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of a popular ice cream sold in six states.

Concerns about the potential undeclared presence of eggs led the grocery retailer Publix to recall one lot of Publix Rich & Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream with UPC 41415 03043, according to an FDA advisory.

“The Publix Rich & Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream half gallon container with a sell by date of June 19, 2026 may contain Publix Rich & Creamy French Vanilla Ice Cream with a mismatch French Vanilla container lid,” the FDA said.

AllRecipes.com notes that French Vanilla is different from traditional Vanilla ice cream because the base of French Vanilla may contain egg yolks, while plain vanilla ice cream typically does not contain egg.

The dessert is described on its packaging as “velvety vanilla ice cream made with an egg custard base, real milk and cream, vanilla extract and ground vanilla beans.”

The FDA said that people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs may run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the product.

There are nine major food allergens that the FDA requires all companies to identify in their products, which include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.

Publix operates 1,421 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky.

However, the withdrawn ice cream was only distributed to Publix grocery stores located in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, and to some locations in Florida, according to the recall notice.

Publix urged shoppers who purchased the recalled ice cream to return it to their local store for a full refund.

“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted product has been removed from all store shelves,” Publix communications director Maria Brous said in a statement posted online. “To date, there have been no reported cases of illness."
Earlier this month, the FDA announced a Class I recall of more than 6 million eggs distributed in six states following potential Salmonella contamination, according to an enforcement report.

The recall covers several products from Black Sheep Egg Company, LLC, located in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.

The eggs were distributed to retail and wholesale locations in Arkansas and Missouri, as well as to wholesale locations in Mississippi, Texas, California, and Indiana.

“The FDA recently conducted routine environmental swabbing at our facility here at Black Sheep Egg Company," company leaders said in a recent Facebook post. "A small number of those swabs, taken from non-food contact surfaces such as floor drains, floor cracks, and drip pans, tested positive for Salmonella."
