A shooting outside a high school graduation in Northern California on Wednesday evening left one teenager dead and three other people injured, including a child, officials said.
Police said four people were wounded during the incident, including three victims aged 11, 20, and 25, who suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. The fourth victim, an 18-year-old, died from injuries sustained in the shooting.
The department clarified that the 11-year-old is currently recovering at a local hospital, dispelling rumors circulating on social media that the child had died.
Authorities said the victims' identities are being withheld pending the notification of next of kin and to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation, which is being assisted by the Vacaville Police Department, the Solano County Sheriff's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
"This event was attended by approximately 1,000 people, with hundreds of potential witnesses to this tragedy," the Fairfield Police Department said. "Detectives are currently identifying and interviewing these witnesses and are actively following up on investigative leads."
Officials did not publicly identify a suspect and said no additional information would be released as the investigation continues. NTD reached out for an update on whether a suspect has since been identified or taken into custody, but a response was not received by publication time.
Authorities have asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Fairfield Police Department's Investigations Tip Line by calling 707-428-7345 or emailing [email protected].
The department extended condolences to the victims, their families, and others affected by the incident, acknowledging the impact the shooting has had on local residents.
"We understand this incident has caused significant concern within our community," officials said. "While the investigation remains ongoing, Fairfield Police investigators are working diligently to identify those responsible and ensure the continued safety of our community."
"I graduated from Fairfield High School and I can’t get my head and heart around this tragedy. I’m shaken to my soul," she added. "The shooter will face justice. But now I’m praying for the families affected and all of those who witnessed the shootings."
