A new song by Norwegian DJ Kygo featuring the late Whitney Houston has just been released.
The new song is a remix of Houston's unreleased cover of Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love.”
In an Instagram post on June 28 introducing the release of the song, Kygo revealed that Houston performed the cover during her Tokyo show in 1990. She then re-recorded it in 1991 intending to include it in her third album "I'm Your Baby Tonight."
"It was never officially released...until now," the post reads.
Concert footage of Houston performing "Higher Love" can still be found online. The backing music reflects the type of songs she was known for doing at that time, as opposed to the modern electronic remix of the backing music for the Kygo version.
When Houston recorded the vocal track for “Higher Love" in 1991, it didn’t fit the plan for her to move toward a more R&B sound.
The new “Higher Love” is just one of many planned projects meant to celebrate Houston’s legacy.
Pat Houston is Whitney’s sister-in-law and the sole executor of her estate. She formed a partnership with Primary Wave Music Publishing with the goal of putting out more projects with Whitney’s name. Among those projects are a musical concert tour starring a hologram version of Whitney Houston, a new album of unreleased Whitney Houston songs, and more, Rolling Stone reported.
“We want to remind people why they fell in love with Whitney in the first place,” Pat Houston told the magazine.
Whitney Houston's Death
Pop singer Whitney Houston died on February 11, 2012. The Los Angeles County coroner said the cause of death was accidental drowning, according to ABC News. She was discovered face down in the bathtub. Drug paraphernalia was found around the tub.In the hotel room at the Beverly Hilton, where she died, investigators found open containers of alcohol and many bottles of prescription drugs in the room, according to ABC News. The toxicology report revealed she had been abusing cocaine, and that there was much cocaine in her system at the time of her death.
The report also indicated that she was a smoker, and that Houston was starting to lose her voice due to emphysema.
Forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht said he doesn’t agree that Houston died due to accidental drowning, but that she was already dying when she fell into the tub.
"I think that she fell into this very hot water, that accounts for a little bruise that was seen in the left forehead area, some other pressure markings on the face, including the slight laceration of the lip, and the fact that she is lying face down," Wecht told ABC News. "I think that this lady fell into the water, she was unconscious, dead or dying when she fell into the tub.”
