An 11-year-old boy was wounded after allegedly being shot by another 11-year-old at an elementary school playground in Texas over the weekend, authorities said.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at Opal Smith Elementary on the 3000 block of Fletcher Road in the Heartland community of Kaufman County, just outside of Dallas, shortly before 7:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, the Crandall Police Department (CPD) shared in a Facebook statement.

"Upon arrival, officers made contact with an eleven year old juvenile who appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound to the leg," officials said.

The boy was treated at the scene by emergency medical service personnel before being airlifted to a children's hospital in Dallas. Hospital staff later reported that his injury did not seem life-threatening and that he was in stable condition, CPD noted.

CPD said another 11-year-old—suspected of being the shooter—was taken into custody.

Officials are investigating what led up to the shooting, but didn't share any additional details on how the child was able to get hold of a gun. It is unclear whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

Although the incident took place in the elementary school's fenced playground area, CPD said there was no reason to believe that students or staff were in any immediate danger.

"At this time, Crandall Detectives are investigating the situation and have determined this to be an isolated incident amongst the two juveniles," officials said.

Administrators were notified of the shooting and the school opened at its normal hours Monday morning. NTD reached out to Opal Smith Elementary for comment, but a response was not received by publication time. However, the district told Fox 4 News that the school did have additional counselors on hand if anyone wanted to discuss the incident.

One mother, Jasmin Jackson, told the station that her son is friends with the two boys involved in the shooting.

"They play outside every day," she said. "It could have been my son, so it makes me hurt. It breaks my heart that these kids are getting hurt or even playing with such dangerous weapons."

Facebook users also weighed in on the shooting, with some urging for charges to be levied against the parents of the alleged shooter.

"Arrest the parents!" one person wrote.

"Thank God no other injuries or worse. Parents need to be held accountable," another shared.

"Sounds like the parents should not be allowed to have a gun," a third commented. "Reckless endangerment of a child."
