The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) upgraded 308 cases of recalled frozen cookie dough to its highest risk class due to an undeclared allergen that may be present.
“Frozen Monster Cookie Dough, which contains peanut, may be packaged in a bag that is labeled as White Chocolate Macadamia Nut,” FDA officials said.
Since then, the FDA assigned its highest risk alert to the sweet treat.
“As a Class II recall, this means the risk is temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” registered dietitian nutritionist Tiffany Bruno told NTD.
A Class 1 recall is defined as having a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to will cause serious adverse health consequences or death, while a Class 3 event involves products that violate regulations but are unlikely to cause health problems, such as minor labeling errors.
There are six bags per case of 2-pound 8.5-ounce packages of the recalled cookie product that were distributed in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Nebraska in retail grocery stores and through distribution centers.
They have a Dec. 6 best by date stamped on the packages.
“Observable through the clear window in the bag, the Monster Cookies frozen dough has visible chocolate chips and colored candy-coated pieces whereas the White Chocolate Macadamia Nut frozen cookie dough does not,” the FDA said.
People who have allergies to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
The FDA urged consumers who purchased the withdrawn product, to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The recalled vegan chocolate bars were distributed in Colorado, Massachusetts, Nevada, Washington state and sold nationally online at Frans.com.
