The Atlantic Ocean Road -- probably the most dangerously wet road in the world

It's not the most dangerous road in the world -- that would be the Yungas Road, or Death Road, in Bolivia -- but the Atlantic Ocean Road in Norway is certainly one of the most dangerously wet roads in the world.

It runs between Averøy and Eida and forms one of the fixed traffic connections between Kristiansund and Molde in the east of Norway roughly 190 miles (300 km) north of Bergen. Being unsheltered to the north sea on one side makes it prone to strong winds and heavy sea spray.

Whenever there is a storm pushing big waves against the shore and over some of the bridges, the road literally drowns in water a few inches high, creating an unbelievable spectacle many people come to watch.

Although this route was originally planned as a railway in the early 20th century, construction for the roadworks started in the summer of 1983 and was finished nearly six years later. In between there were several strong storms that made the road workers realize what a thrill it would be for spectators standing near the shore.

The road itself is one of Norway's cultural heritage sites and a popular spot for automotive commercials due do its unique turns and astonishing surroundings.
