The popular milk brand Horizon Organic has recalled thousands of cases of its low-fat chocolate milk sold across four states over concerns the product may feature faulty packaging.
Select sizes of the company's Chocolate Organic Lowfat Milk with DHA Omega-3 have been pulled due to the "package integrity" being compromised, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
shared earlier this week in an enforcement report.
The voluntary recall includes more than 3,500 18-carton cases of the chocolate milk, which were sold in 8-ounce cartons and 6-packs and feature the UPC 742365004322. The products were distributed in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Oregon and have best-by dates of Aug. 14 and Aug. 15, 2026.
On Tuesday, the FDA classified the recall as
Class II, meaning the products "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences," but that "the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."
Horizon Organic initially
announced the recall on March 11, noting that the compromised seal "may cause the packaging of the product to appear bloated or be subject to leakage."
The company added that the issue may cause the milk to spoil prematurely or have an unpleasant taste, odor, or texture. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
consuming spoiled or contaminated products may lead to a range of foodborne illnesses. The symptoms of food poisoning may include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever.
NTD reached out to Horizon Organic's representative for more information, but a response was not received by publication time. However, in the product recall notice, the company said "corrective and preventive actions have been implemented" to prevent the issue from happening again.
"True to our roots, we will always keep pushing our practices forward for the good of the horizon we all share," the company said.
Anyone who purchased the affected Chocolate Organic Lowfat Milk should discard the product and retain proof of purchase, including a copy of the receipt and any available packaging information. Customers can contact Horizon Organic at 1-888-494-3020 for additional details about the recall and to check whether they are eligible for a refund.
Horizon Organic previously
recalled nearly 20,000 cases of its Aseptic Plain Whole Milk over concerns the product could prematurely spoil before its best-by date. The company first announced the recall in December 2024, with the FDA classifying it as Class II the following month. The milk was sold individually in 8-ounce cartons and in packs of 12 and distributed in Arizona, California, and Nevada.
