American singer Billy Joel has canceled all scheduled concerts for 2025 and 2026 after being diagnosed with a brain condition known as normal pressure hydrocephalus, his team announced Friday.

According to a statement shared on his social media, the 76-year-old singer—known as the “Piano Man” after his signature 1973 hit—recently received the diagnosis.

Recent performances have reportedly worsened his condition, “leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance,” the statement read. “Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.”

“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” Joel said in a message to fans.

The statement also noted Joel is “thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.”

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the condition primarily affects people over 65. Although the symptoms can resemble dementia, NPH is often treatable and sometimes reversible. It can cause problems with walking, bladder control, and cognitive function. Diagnosis typically involves neurological testing and brain imaging, and early treatment offers the best chance of recovery.
This is the second time this year Joel has had to adjust his touring schedule due to health issues. In March, he announced he had undergone surgery and physical therapy, but did not specify his health condition. At the time, doctors expected a full recovery. His postponed tour was set to resume July 5, 2025, in Pittsburgh, and Joel stated then that “my health must come first” as he looked forward to returning to the stage.

However, the recent NPH diagnosis has now resulted in the cancellation of all scheduled concerts.

Joel’s team said he is grateful for the continued support of his fans and looks forward to the day he can return to performing. All ticket holders will receive automatic refunds.

According to his official biography, Joel has sold more than 150 million records, scored 33 Top 40 hits, received 23 Grammy nominations, and won six Grammy Awards since signing his first solo recording contract in 1972. Aside from creating music and performing, he has been a “longtime advocate for music education,” holding master classes on various college campuses.

Joel—a New York native born on May 9, 1949—has three children. The announcement comes just two weeks after his recent birthday.
