From human societies to “cellular societies” and those of wild animals, how do we see the value of interdependence in relationships reflected?

Mitochondria are mainly known as the “power plants” or “batteries” of our cells. But, on a philosophical level, physician and author Dr. Molly Maloof MD says they’re emblems of our social needs as people:

“They are basically social organelles. They form societies, they connect, they share information, they break apart.”

“When they disconnect from other mitochondria, over time, they can actually experience apoptosis, which is really cellular suicide – [programmed] cell death.”

Author of “<a href="https://a.co/d/1womWPu">The Spark Factor</a>: The Secret to Supercharging Energy, Becoming Resilient, and Feeling Better Than Ever,” Maloof joined “Vital Signs” to highlight the cellular benefits of human-to-human interaction and to offer her tips on how we can enrich our social engagement.

“We’ve seen a reduction of the social institutions, including family and religion, which foster healthy, long-term relationships between men and women,” she said, adding, “I’m a big believer that we need to bring these back.”

“I think men and women need each other. I think women thrive when they're in a healthy relationship with a man, but I think men need [to develop] more relationship skills.”

Maloof points to differing male-female concentrations of the “bonding hormone” oxytocin to explain, in part, why being sociable may come easier for women:

“Women are very oxytocin dominant, and so we are just designed for nurturing and designed for connection.”

Maloof says women should use their biological advantage to help men overcome their social vulnerability, and to be more connected; adding that women can draw a lesson from the behavior of female elk in the wild.

“When there's a hunter that comes by, all the females gather around the males and protect them because they know that … they're important to the perpetuation of their herd.”
