While ADHD can be reliably diagnosed using DSM criteria, there is still no definitive biological test – no tissue marker, no single brain scan that confirms it beyond doubt. That raises an uncomfortable question: if we aren’t certain the child has ‘the disorder,’ how can we be sure about medicating it?

At the same time, the risks are real. Research shows that individuals with untreated ADHD face significantly higher rates of accidents, substance use, and even early mortality. Ignoring the problem isn’t the answer.

However, medication, Harvard-trained psychiatrist Dr. Srini Pillay argues, is only one tool. On “<a href="https://www.theepochtimes.com/epochtv/vital-signs">Vital Signs</a>,” he highlights alternatives that often get overlooked –  structured routines, movement-based interventions, executive function coaching, and what he’s dubbed “strategic unfocus.” The latter employs brief naps, doodling, and even positive daydreaming to help recharge attention and spark creativity rather than suppress it.

Is ADHD always a disorder? Or can it reflect a differently wired brain that needs a more personalized approach?

For parents weighing difficult decisions, this conversation moves beyond slogans and quick fixes. It challenges both blind acceptance and blanket rejection of treatment – and invites a deeper look at how we understand attention, behavior, and the developing brain.
