In this episode of<a href="https://www.theepochtimes.com/epochtv/vital-signs"> Vital Signs</a>, Dr. Jeffrey Bland – often called the father of functional medicine – argues that these common complaints may all trace back to one central system: the gut.

“About 70% of our immune system is clustered around the gut,” Bland explains, describing it as a critical interface between what we eat and how our body responds. When that system is disrupted– by ultra-processed foods, hidden additives like sulfites and MSG, or even overuse of antibiotics – it can trigger inflammation that doesn’t stay contained. Instead, it shows up as brain fog, fatigue, skin conditions, or chronic joint pain.

The conversation highlights the foundational precept of functional medicine: understanding symptoms rather than merely suppressing them: “Our body will give us signs,” Bland says. “The question is—do we treat the cause, or just the effect?”

He outlines a practical “4R” approach to restoring gut health—removing triggers, replacing digestive support, reinoculating beneficial bacteria, and repairing the gut lining—and shares a striking case of a patient who went from being unable to stand to hiking a mountain within a year.
